Long working hours culture: out of fashion!
30-03-2012
We all seem to be well accustomed to the idea of putting in long working hours in order to live up to the expectations of our managers and peers.
We almost consider it to be a barometer to measure our chances to become professionally successful. For some odd reason, we seem to believe that spending 10 to 12 hours a day in the office proves that you are willing to work hard and that you are not a benefiter.
Although it surely is rewarding to work hard, we should however not neglect the downside of it all. Long days on the job increases the number of stressed employees which are highly likely to become the victim of a burnout or worse as we have seen in Japan where people seem to die of an illness called 'Karoshi' or death from overwork!
It is important to emphasize though that 'hours worked' and 'productivity' are two totally different concepts and that there is hardly a relationship between them. Research has shown that, by means of example, the Greek are the ones that work the longest in Europe but are heading at the same time the rankings of the lowest productivity average.
What would then be the potential road to success? Why not create a 'new way of work' where 'total flexibility' is granted to the working community meaning that they can decide themselves 'where' and 'when' they work? Think of all the potential benefits that it can bring: people can work from home avoiding stress and time loss whilst commuting to and from the office or maybe they become increasingly productive once they have brought the kids to school and cleaned up the house. After all, our employers care in the end about the result and not about the effort that was invested into it. This all is the very essence of 'workforce management'.
So, measure the work by the result is the key message in this article. Protime's time & attendance solution is by far the best tool to have an overview of how many hours your employees have worked.
